In 2015, the Folk Alliance awarded the band with the Interna- tional Song of the Year for 'Best Medicine,' o their second full length album of the same name. e Stray Birds have been receiving rave reviews for years, NPR naming their selitled debut full length album one of the Top 10 Folk/ Americana albums of 2012. eir most recent album, Magic Fire was released in August and debuted at #2 on Billboard's Bluegrass chart. For Magic Fire, the group teamed up with three-time Grammy winning producer Larry Campbell, who has worked with the likes of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Levon Helm and Willie Nelson. e band is currently touring the US and UK. Aer a decade of rocking smoky bars and honky-tonks across the country with his band Fih On e Floor, Justin Wells has emerged from the dank, bourbon soaked abyss and cigarette fog with a strong case for Americana album of the year in his rst solo release, Dawn In e Distance. e record, released by August Music, LLC is a journey through Wells' days of performing on the road, his gru rumble of a voice recounting what he's le behind, the next gig and crowd and the love of performing. "I'm denitely a band guy, so having only my name on the marquee has been dierent for me," Wells explained during our short conversation, "this album is 100% autobiographical, just all the things I've been dealing with since the band split. It felt good to get back to writing and performing and getting back out on the road again." While Wells may prefer performing and collaborating with a band as opposed to solo, with Dawn In e Distance he has shown that he can carry the bulk of the act on his own. "It's hard to regroup and start over at 34," he says, chuckling, but with soulful tunes like 'Still No Rain' and 'e Highway Less Taken,' he's made it look easy.
