DR. BRENDA SHUMAN-RILEY H e a d o f S c h o o l TATTNALL Square Academy What does Tattnall offer students that is unique and important in today's competitive academic environment? The world at large is enormous, and our students are aware that competition with a vast mixture of people is the norm for their generation. While we prepare students for this reality, we strive to keep our students true to themselves, value their uniqueness, and tap into the God given talents each has. We are not so large that people get lost or feel like a number, and we are not so small that students feel scrutinized with every move. Our class sizes are deliberate so that discussion is encouraged, hands-on projects are facilitated, and independence is possible while also knowing a masterful instructor is present to assist as needed. In order to make TSA a real possibility for families, we have reduced our tuition while others in our area have increased their rates. This has been done while simultaneously expanding our curricula options to include 4 foreign languages in grades 2-12, targeted instructional support services in grades 4-12, dual enrollment for college credit, student volunteer requirements at all grade levels, sequential Bible curricula, full day K3 and K4 programs, career shadow days, state championships in athletics and academics, and school-community mission work. What is most rewarding in your job as headmaster? Witnessing young lives impacted spiritually, academically, athletically, and socially is enough motivation for me to love what I do. Because we are a family, we all share in the triumphs and tragedies. We love each other, watch over each other, and support each other. What are your goals for the school over the next five years? Five broad goals have been identified: increase alumni involvement, link best instructional strategies with technology applications to increase student productivity, expand cultural diversity in both students and staff, upgrade facilities to include state of the art STEM learning centers, and financially support scholarship opportunities for all qualified students. Some of my earliest childhood memories are feeling compelled to fill pieces of paper with my drawings. I drew my family, my pets and even house plans. Years later I entered UGA's graphic design program. I found that the concepts of design, color theory, and typography inspired me. I knew I'd found my career path, and it was incredible to realize I would be able to make a living doing something I enjoyed so much. Today's technology makes putting together a publication, print ads, brochures or logo design much easier than it has ever been, yet creative thinking still reigns supreme. What is unique about your business and the way you work with your clients? I've had clients come to me after working with large agencies where they felt insignificant. They say they appreciate how carefully I consider every decision made on their behalf, treating their businesses and budgets as if they were my own. I've celebrated success with clients, and I've walked through financial difficulties with them, too. How rewarding it has been to help a struggling organization triple their bottom line! What is your biggest challenge? Like most in my profession, I experience deadline pressures. Most of my workday involves helping my clients' businesses, so I'm left with little time for promoting my own. Outside of work, what do you enjoy? Photography, power walking, reading, and spending time with my family. I have amazing children and I learn from them every day. I'm an active member of Ingleside Baptist Church where I work in the children's department and co-teach a women's ministry group. 161 Rivoli Ridge Drive I Macon, Ga. 31210 I 478-757-1441 www.bargerondesigns.com I bargerondesigns@cox.net
