C O M | 5 7 Townsend Presents Mercer University School of Music | music.mercer.edu Nova Thomas, Acting for the Operatic Stage Sunday, Sept. 15-Wednesday, Sept. 18 Nova Thomas is an internationally known opera singer whose performances have taken her to the opera houses of Cologne, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Paris, Hong Kong, Dublin, Belfast, and New York. A faculty member of The New School's Drama School and Mannes School of Music in New York City and the world- renowned Westminster Choir College, Ms. Thomas will lead a four-day workshop with Mercer University voice students on acting for the operatic stage. Diana Thompson, Voice Master Class Tuesday, Oct. 29 Diana Thompson will lead a select group of Mercer University voice majors in a master class that touches on vocal technique, acting for vocalists, lyric diction, vocal artistry, musicianship, and other areas of interest pertinent to the development of the pre- professional voice. The master teacher's instruction will be specifically tailored to the needs of the individual student. Gary Thor Wedow, Baroque Music Residency Sunday, Nov. 10-Wednesday, Nov. 13 A member of the vocal arts faculty at the Juilliard School in New York City and a pre- eminent Baroque scholar and conductor, Gary Thor Wedow will lead a four-day workshop for Mercer University voice students in the art of Baroque Performance Practice. The workshop will also feature instrumental study students, culminating in an afternoon recital of Baroque music on Wednesday, Nov. 13. Chadley Ballantyne, Vocal Pedagogy Symposium Sunday, Jan. 26, 7 p.m. This is an exploration of voice pedagogy for adolescent singers. Non-uniform vocal fold and vocal tract growth, and changing support strategies needed during adolescence present unique possibilities. Evidence-based voice pedagogy equips and empowers teachers to help young singers discover their voices during this critical stage of growth and development. Voice Master Class Tuesday, Jan. 28, 3 p.m. Rita Sloan, Piano Master Class Monday, Feb. 24 Rita Sloan is acknowledged internationally as a leading teacher of piano, collaborative piano, and chamber music. In 1999, she was appointed a piano faculty member and director of the collaborative piano program at the University of Maryland. As an artist-faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival and School, Ms. Sloan founded their collaborative piano program. Emily Levin, Harp Master Class Saturday, May 2 Emily Levin is the principal harpist of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Bronze Medal Winner of the Ninth USA International Harp Competition. As adjunct professor of harp at Southern Methodist University and on the faculty at the Young Artist Harp Seminar, Ms. Levin is an excellent pedagogue who will be inspiration and motivation to harpists of all ages.
