The Music of Toshiko Akiyoshi Friday, April 12 Toshiko Akiyoshi's music is distinctive for its texture and for its Japanese influence. She was inspired to investigate her own Japanese music heritage and occasionally composed using Japanese themes, harmonies, and even Japanese instruments in her big band music. Akiyoshi's music remained planted firmly in jazz, however, reflecting influences of classical jazz greats from Ellington to Charles Mingus. Join us as we perform her masterworks from the East.
