Martha Malone, soprano Thursday, September 7 Carol Goff, piano Music expresses all of life, from the sublime to the hilarious, from rags to riches--from lullabies to dirges. In this eclectic program you'll hear quite a variety of styles and genres,from Purcell to Sondheim. Prepare to be surprised! Mercer University Faculty Brass Quintet Tuesday, September 12 The Mercer University Faculty Brass Quintet will be up to its normal "Brass Tactics" this concert season featuring a wide gamut of brass literature sure to fit the tastes of music lovers from across Middle Georgia! Mercer University Opera Martha Malone, director. Richard Kosowski, conductor Children's Opera The Trial of Goldilocks by R. Chauls & J. Robinette September 29-30, 6 p.m.; October 1, 2:30 p.m. One hour in length. The whole family will have fun with this charming, witty show in which Goldilocks is prosecuted for breaking and entering the home of the Three Bears! In the courtroom, we watch as Goldilocks and the Bears enact the traditional tale. Next, the prosecutor and the defense attorney present their hilarious versions of the same events. Our jury of animals makes some surprising decisions and doles out appropriately funny sentences, so everybody goes home happy—and a little wiser! General Admission, $10.00; Children grades K-8 and all students free; free with Mercer ID. Mainstage Production Così fan tutte (Women are Like That) by W.A. Mozart February 8-10, 7:30 p.m.; Feb. 11, 2:30 p.m. Brighten your winter with a pre-Valentine's Day romantic comedy. In fact, we might call this opera an "anti-Valentine", since the entire plot revolves around proving that all lovers can be tempted into infidelity! However, it's Mozart, so even with tongue firmly in cheek, the characters are profoundly human and the music is divinely beautiful, all the while offering plenty of laughs. Experience this masterpiece of opera buffa in the intimate setting of Fickling Hall. Performed in English with orchestra. General Admission, $15; Free with Mercer ID. All students free. Opera Gala Highlights from Hoffmann by Jacques Offenbach April 17, 7:30 p.m. We close the season with a gala concert of selections from Jacques Offenbach's mysterious and magical operetta, The Tales of Hoffmann (Les contes d'Hoffmann). From the famous "Doll's Aria" in Act I to Act III's beloved "Barcarolle" duet, you will be carried away on waves of lush, gorgeous sound and sparkling vocal virtuosity.
