You can always spend time volunteering at the shelter if you are not in a position to adopt or consider fostering for a rescue. I like to say that these are our community's dogs and cats and it is our responsibility to help them. Many have recently come off the streets or out of a home where they were no longer loved or cared for. In addition to our stray population Macon has very large numbers of owner surrendered pets. People surrender their animals for a multitude of reasons that include job or housing loss, puppies or kittens that come as a result of not spaying or neutering. Adopting a shelter pet also makes great financial sense. The adoption fee at Macon-Bibb Animal Welfare is $100 for dogs and $75 for cats and includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, and de-worming. With any new pet patience is required. You need to remember that this animal has just left a stressful environment and will need time to de-compress. Here are some tips to create the greatest opportunity for success. 1 Create a safe, quiet place to relax such as a crate 2 Potty training may take time but you must be vigilant about taking your dog out several times a day 3 Introduce your new pet to other dogs and cats slowly and feed separately at first 4 Put a collar and an I.D. tag on your pet immediately and have your pet microchipped. Many of these animals will be a flight risk for some time and this will help them get home more quickly if they should get out 5 Teach your children to treat them with respect and use caution with very small children 6 Give them time to show affection, they may be insecure at first 7 Protect your shoes and anything else you do not want ruined 8 Provide plenty of chew toys or a cat scratching post 9 Give lots of cuddle time and belly rubs But know this. If you give them time and have patience they will come to know you love them and that they've reached their forever home. The gratitude in their eyes will never go away, NEVER. On those days when you are feeling down they will somehow be able to empathize with you because they've been there. And that, my friend, makes it all worth it. MACON-BIBB ANIMAL WELFARE 4214 Fulton Mill Road Adoption Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 11:00-5:00 and Saturday from 11:00-4:00 I like to say that these are our community's dogs and cats and it is our responsibility to help them.
