30 counties in Central Georgia. Part of Central Georgia Health System, MCCG is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 corporation owned by Macon-Bibb Hospital Authority. There are only three Level 1 Trauma Centers in Georgia outside of metro Atlanta and one is located at MCCG. The hospital serves 30 counties and nearly 750,000 persons in central and south. The Georgia Heart Center of MCCG opened the Albert Luce Jr. Heart Institute in 2008. This $87 million building was specially designed for comprehensive treatment of cardiac disease including diagnostic testing rooms and surgical procedures. The Georgia Heart Center performs approximately 750 open-heart surgeries annually. and is the only heart center outside of the Atlanta area to offer Left Ventricular Assist Device operations for heart failure patients. Founded in 1987, The Children's Hospital at The Medical Center of Central Georgia serves over 45,000 children from 84 counties in central and south Georgia. This 112- bed facility includes a 34-bed General Pediatric Unit, a 22-bed Pediatric Critical Care Unit and a 14-bed Level II Nursery as well as an area for outpatient services. Only a few blocks away, the Ronald McDonald House provides temporary accommodations to the families of seriously ill children who are being treated at The Children's Hospital. The Cancer Life Center, which will open a new facility on First Street later this year, uses a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment and management of cancer specializing in breast, gastrointestinal, colorectal, lung and pediatric oncology. Central Georgia Rehabilitation Hospital partners with MCCG to provide a 58- bed rehabilitation center as well as outpatient services. The Coliseum Heart Institute is an advanced cardiac center offering all services from non-invasive cardiology to open heart surgery. The Coliseum Heart Institute, located at Coliseum Medical Centers, boasts Joint Commission Primary Stroke Care Designation, has an Accredited Heart Failure and Chest Pain Center, and has received Gold Plus Recognition for Stroke Care by American Heart Association. The Coliseum Cancer Institute specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer including lung, prostate, colorectal and breast. The Coliseum Breast Center is the only Breast Center of Excellence in the area and has been nationally accredited by the Accreditation Program for Breast Centers of the American College of Surgeons. The Coliseum Orthopedic and Spine Institute is certified for total joint replacement. The Family Ties Birthing Center includes family- centered childbirth assisted by expert medical and nursing staffs as well as the 13-bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
