Houston County educator Amanda Miliner is the Georgia Teacher of the Year. She is a fourth- grade teacher at Miller Elementary School. Families have the option of several excellent private schools, including Macon's Mount de Sales Academy, Stratford Academy and Tattnall Square Academy. Catholic parochial schools include Macon's St. Joseph's School, and St. Peter Claver School and de Sales. Sacred Heart serves students in Houston County. St. Joseph's School has the distinction of being the oldest primary school in the area. It opened in 1872 as part of St. Joseph's Church. COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES Middle Georgia is home to three historic universities. Wesleyan College in Macon opened in 1836 and was the first college in the world to offer degrees to ACCORDING TO THE 2013 COLLEGE AND CAREER READY PERFORMANCE INDEX, 25 of Bibb County's 43 public schools showed some sort of improvement in the past year. In fact, scores at the elementary, middle and high school levels all showed improvement from 2012 for an overall increase from 57.3 in 2012 to 62.9 last year. Overall, Bibb elementary schools increased their scores from 60.2 in 2012 to 66.3 last year; middle schools increased from 56.9 to 61.4; and high schools improved from 52.0 to 56.9. Alexander II Magnet School was the highest-rated school in the county at 89.7. Among Bibb County middle schools, Rutland Middle was the best at 74.1. Howard High School was the top-rated high school in Bibb County at 70.8. Houston County essentially maintained its overall single score for 2013 with an 80.2, compared with 80.9 in 2012. Lake Joy Primary School received the highest single score in the district with a 96. Peach County High School's score jumped from 66.8 in 2012 to 73 in 2013.
