Georgia launched a state lottery in 1993 to fund educational programs. The Hope
Scholarship has had a profound effect, providing billions of dollars to almost two
million college students.
Also funded by the lottery is Bright from the Start, Georgia's nationally recognized
pre-k program. State-funded pre-k centers provide high quality pre-school
experiences to prepare children for elementary school.
Local counties have committed their resources to providing quality education.
In 2009, Bibb County voters approved the extension of an Education Special
Purpose Local Options Tax to fund future facilities improvement projects.
The funds raised from the 2005 ESPLOST allowed the Bibb County Board of
Education to construct new school buildings and remodel existing facilities. Bibb
County is the region's second-largest school district with approximately 25,000
students.
Serving approximately 28,000 K-12 students in 38 schools, Houston County is the
area's largest school district. Houston County students consistently perform above
