Her love of music always influenced her life and charitable work. An accomplished musician, she performed numerous musical programs here and abroad. Years after giving up her musical career to focus on raising her family, she began performing in public again in the late 1980s. She performed a two-piano show with well-known Macon pianist Edward Eikner in 1992. The duo released two albums and performed across the United States and in Italy. Fickling also believed in giving back to the community and served on the boards of the Atlanta Symphony, the Macon Symphony, the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., and the Georgia Council for the Arts and Humanities. She also served as the first chair of the Citizens Advisory Committee for Georgia Clean and Beautiful, the first statewide clean community program in the country. She later served on the national board of Keep America Beautiful where she received the Lady Bird Johnson Award and Woman of the Year Award. She also served on the boards of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, the Hay House, the Macon Heritage Foundation, the Cherry Blossom Festival, Wesleyan's board of trustees and the Grand Opera House and others. When the Grand Opera House building faced demolition Fickling headed the fundraising effort that is credited with saving the building, which today is a vital part of Macon's fine arts scene. Wesleyan honored one of its most famous graduates by presenting her an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree, followed in 1989 by the Alumnae Association's Award for Distinguished Service to the Community. Mercer University presented her with an honorary humanities doctorate, after having dedicated The Neva Langley Fickling Recital Hall at Mercer University in her honor in 2003.
