DECEMBER/JANUARY 2013 MACON MAGAZINE I 21 bits & pieces HELMS COLLEGE Goodwill's Helms College has been granted Title IV eligibility by the U.S. Department of Education. Under Title IV, qualified students attending Helms College are now eligible to participate in various federal student aid programs including Pell grants, deferred students loans and work-study programs. "Financing higher-education is a challenge for students and parents," said Jim Stiff, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries, the parent company of Helms College. "We are pleased to offer federal student aid options, as well as our own tuition assistance. Helms College is committed to helping students fulfill their dreams to attend culinary school." Helms College culinary classes began in October at the campuses in Macon and Augusta GA. The next set of classes will begin Jan. 14. Helms College offers state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, highly qualified instructors and hands-on based curricula. Department Chair Jay Stancill, said, "After years of instructing at post-secondary for-profit colleges, we can now offer the same quality level of instruction that matches any culinary college in North America for a fraction of the cost. Helms College students will be able to graduate and enter the active workforce without carrying an enormous student loan debt; and you can't beat that." Helms College is currently engaged in a feasibility study in collaboration with University of Georgia's Fanning Institute to determine the top 10 middle skills growth areas for post-secondary study and enterprise creation in both Middle Georgia and the Central Savannah River Area. The study will guide future certificate, diploma, and associate degree offerings of Helms College.
