A few guidelines when choosing containers: The container must be big enough to support plants when they are fully grown Containers must hold soil without spilling The container must have adequate drainage Containers must have never held products that would be toxic to plants or people Once the containers are chosen, consider the potting medium. A fairly lightweight potting mix is needed for container vegetable gardening. Soil straight from the garden usually is not a good choice because it may be too heavy. Packaged potting soil available at local garden centers is relatively lightweight and may make a good container medium. Vegetables in containers are unexpected – take advantage of their natural beauty and the colorful fruits to blend a beautiful pot. Edibles such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, squash, chives, strawberries, basil, thyme, oregano, rosemary and parsley will all thrive in a potted environment. Pair a vegetable with a flowering plant, or add variegated ivy to an herb pot. AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2013 MACON MAGAZINE I 81
