October/November 24 | maconmagazine.com 87 1 Set at least one specific goal Without a fitness objective, you almost certainly ensure failure. The good thing is, your goal doesn't have to be complicated at all. Choose a fitness goal that excites you and gives you a sense of direction. Here are some ideas: ● I will maintain my weight throughout fall and winter ● I will train for a 5K ● I will attend a fitness class two days a week ● I will walk for 30 minutes every morning ● I will eat some kind of plant food at every meal ● I will eat 5 cups of vegetables a day ● I will refrain from eating after 8 p.m. Whether your goal is achievement- based or activity-based doesn't matter. The important thing is to set a goal. 2 Set your mind for consistency I've often said that consistency is the most important aspect of implementing any lifestyle change. Why? Because it's the only way that you'll get results. Anyone can go to Zumba or fitness boot camp once. However, coming back is how you signal your body to adapt. With whatever goal(s) you've chosen, determine in your mind now that you will be consistent. Let nothing get in the way of your consistency. This means that lack of planning, weather, and dis tractions such as TV shows and social media cannot get in the way. These are the kinds of things you must determine in your heart now. But how do you implement consistency? 3 Put guidelines in place to ensure you stay with it If you're serious about achieving your fitness goal, you'll structure your life to make it possible. Here are some suggestions: ● Get a friend or accountability partner – bringing someone with you to work out is a sure way to increase your compliance and success. The key is to choose someone who will hold you accountable, encourage you, and not allow you to make excuses. ● Join a fitness class or group – We have many gyms around Macon – Atrium Health Wellness Center, Fitness Xtreme, Regymen, Legends, and Planet Fitness to name a few – not to mention the various other boutique gyms and trainer-run fitness groups around the city. You can easily find a class to attend. ● Set your clothes out – Buy fitness clothes and shoes that you like and set them out the day before. ● Do meal prep – Don't make this complicated. Get to the grocery store to get what you need. The less complex your menu, the better. If necessary and financially feasible for you, invest in a food prep service. The key is, If you're gonna be fit this fall, you have to be very intentional. Down for the challenge? Let me know with a post on social media using the #responsible4myhealth hashtag.
