of the community, the private sector, not-for-profits and county
government, is the push to designate the Ocmulgee National
Park and Preserve as Georgia's first national park. It will be
the state's first national park and the first in the nation to be
co-managed by the Ocmulgee (Creek) Nation and the National
Park Service. As a sign of welcome, the Muscogee (Creek)
Nation's flag flies at Macon-Bibb's Government Center and
soon some streets will carry Mvskoke names in addition to
their English titles.
Final thoughts
"My perception," said Hall, a Macon resident since 2008, "Is
that Macon wants to actually come together more than Tulsa
does. That's not to say we've got all our ducks in a row. And
that's not to say we're still not inflicting hurt. There's less
of a conscious inflicting than there was 10 or 15 years ago
because there's more of a spirit of collaboration and a desire
to hear voices at the table from every demographic, race,
and gender. There is more of an intentionality than there was
before. A trip like this opens our eyes. It builds relationships.
It gives us much to think on. It is a reminder that I have much
to think about... What does home mean? Can home look the
same after a trip like that? The whole purpose of such a trip
is to come back home and approach it differently. It looks
different because I've seen Greenwood and appreciate Macon
differently for what it represents. It's a great sobering but great
encouragement in going home."
