You'll find no other place as deep-seated in
southern rock and soul as the soundtrack of
this city. It's where music history and today's top hits
share a common sound: the original influence of legends
like Little Richard, Otis Redding, and the Allman Brothers,
all who catapulted out of Macon, changing the music of
their era along the way.
Their impact on American music continues with Macon's
music exports of today. Country star Jason Aldean is
from Macon, and his latest album Georgia is a tribute to
his hometown sound. You'll find Macon on the map of
many (and many genres!), including James Brown, R.E.M.,
Young Jeezy, 2WIN, and chillwave pioneers Washed Out,
who call Macon home today.
To understand the present scene, it's important to know
Macon's music history. It's here you can walk into a local
live music venue and find a legend or someone who
played with legends, live on stage, any given night. You
want to hear James Brown's guitar maestro? Check out
any show with Robert Lee Coleman as the headliner.
Mercer University is playing a dynamic role in bridging
Macon's music past to the present. Mercer Music at
Capricorn (540 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.) is home
to the iconic Capricorn Records recording studio. Now
featuring two state-of-the-art working recording
spaces, this historic facility also includes a
Capricorn Records museum and an adjoining
music incubator with rehearsal spaces
available to local musicians.
Macon is music.
