Featuring 180 thriving acres of riparian forest nestled within an
oxbow of the Ocmulgee River, the river is the heart of Amerson
and offers canoeing and tubing. With more than seven miles
of largely shaded paved and unpaved trails, several featuring
blufftop views of the river, Amerson is a favorite of Macon's
hikers, bikers, and runners – and its state-of-the-art accessible
playground offers swings, slides, and other equipment for
children of every level of physical ability.
Off campus, into nature

Whether you're an outdoors extraordinaire or looking to
reset in nature during your study break, Macon boasts
several scenic recreational areas where you can let
yourself and your mind wander.
The Ocmulgee River
1207 Emery Hwy
Open daily | 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Ocmulgee River crosses Georgia's
Fall Line just above Macon and is the
reason people have lived in the vicinity
of present-day Macon continuously
for at least 17,000 years – longer
than anywhere else in the US east of
the Mississippi River. The Ocmulgee
offers good fishing, birding, and wildlife
watching, especially on the east bank
near Ocmulgee Mounds National
Historical Park. Canoeists, kayakers, and
stand-up paddle-boarders enjoy the
river's easy accessibility and beautifully
wooded banks.
