What is the best shampoo to use on a golden retriever? I have used some products that make our dog's hair dull and almost brittle. Is there a shampoo just made for goldens or are there breed-specific shampoos? Tripp, Macon I am not quite sure regarding breedspecific shampoos. We do know that human shampoos are too harsh on your pet's skin. But we also know bathing your pet often is very important. It's a wonderful way to bond with your dog, as well as a way to wash off allergens. Using soapless shampoo, such as Tropiclean or Buddy Wash, will allow you to bathe your pets often without washing away the natural oil on your pet's skin or drying out your pet's skin. Taking care of its skin and coat should include feeding better quality food. Make sure the food does not have corn, wheat, soy or by-products. These items are used as cheap fillers and may contribute to skin allergies. Maybe a dab of fish oil, olive oil or flaxseed may help as well. Who will be your Heart doctor? Everyone talks about dog food all the time but not cat food. How do you research good cat foods and should you feed an outside cat differently than an inside cat? Michelle, Macon Cats, in general, require more protein in their food than dogs. As always, you should avoid bad grains, such as corn, wheat or soy, as well as by-products. As with dogs, these items are used as cheap fillers and may contribute to allergies and dry skin. In general, because cats don't like to drink, wet food is preferred. Because cats like to clean themselves food should contain some type of oil, such as flaxseed or fish oil, to prevent hairballs. This is more apparent with indoor cats. Indoor cats are usually less active as well. When feeding, these concerns should be addressed. You should also look for anti-oxidants in the food's ingredients, such as cranberry for healthier urinary tracts. Taurine, an essential amino acid, is an important ingredient for normal vision and heart function. Check out petsadviser.com/ cat-food-advisor/ for more info on cat food.
