The third annual Loaves & Fishes Foodie Fundraiser is happening Nov. 7 in restaurants all over town. Dine at one of the participating restaurants and they will donate 10 percent of your tab to Loaves and Fishes. Participating restaurants include Bonefish Grill, Dawson's Kitchen, El Sombrero on Forsyth Road, Famous Mikes, Fish 'n' Pig, Grey Goose Player's Club, Ingleside Village Pizza, Jim Shaw's Seafood, Just Tap'd, Longhorn Steakhouse, Sid's Sandwich Shop and Texas Border Grill. Loaves & Fishes is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that has been serving Middle Georgia for more than 50 years. Our mission is to serve and improve the quality of life of the poor and homeless in Macon and Middle Georgia. We began as a food and clothing ministry and have added many other services over the years. Our menu of services has grown to include food, clothing, hygiene items, showers and laundry facilities, as well as direct assistance in obtaining state identification cards, birth certificates and prescription medication. We continue to be a locally run and locally governed organization, serving families as well as individuals. Our services help bridge the gap when times are tough, offering a hand up and not just a hand out. With our very small paid staff, we rely on volunteers to run our Jack Steppe Day Life Center. Many of our service recipients return to volunteer their time, becoming service providers, and in doing so learn the value of giving back. Often our volunteers will use the experience gained at Loaves & Fishes to obtain paid employment elsewhere. — Chet Knapp
