O n behalf of the Townsend School of Music of Mercer University, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2019-20 Discover Townsend concert series. Music Matters at Mercer and we are committed to bringing to Macon and Middle Georgia the finest of performances in all musical genres. We have experienced tremendous support of the arts from our musical constituency, and we anticipate that the 2019-2020 season will be extraordinary! Mercer offers a number of performance venues in the McCorkle Music Building's intimate Neva Langley Fickling Hall, the exquisite Jennings Salon in the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings' Bell House, and central Georgia's historic theatre, The Grand Opera House. Each venue provides an unforgettable acoustic and aesthetic experience that matches the splendor of the musical performance. Among the many highlights of this year will be a return of the audience favorite Townsend Kaleidoscope Concert. This concert features a rapid fire, whirlwind of performers and will showcase the many talented student performers and ensembles. In addition, Macon native Robert McDuffie will return to the Fickling stage in a performance with lutenist Ivano Zanenghi and McDuffie Center Young Artists. There are so many choices, and your musical palette will be filled with the various timbres of sights and sounds in this year's Discover Townsend series. Whether you choose to attend concerts of chamber and ensemble music by winds, brass, strings, percussion, and jazz, opera performances, choral ensembles, the Godsey Keyboard Series or the Fabian Series featuring world-class strings, there is something for everyone. The arts help us to fill our souls with beauty, imagination and transformation. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote "One should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the soul." I invite you to hear the music, lose yourself in the beauty of music, and experience the transformation that occurs when you Discover Townsend. I hope that you will join us. C.
