Macon_Magazine_Ad_7_375x4_8502272017.indd 1 2/27/17 12:40 PM National Immunization Day. With the blessing of a local Hindu monk and leis of marigolds, we began. In the first morning, our team immunized more than 160 babies who were brought to us from the surrounding areas. As our work continued during the week, we walked the slums of New Delhi knocking on doors to find babies who had not received their immunizations. Here in the alleyways and hovels I found the true value of our work. The immense gratitude and emotion of people with so little was unforgettable. Millions of people living in these slums have no understanding of our American lives, only our very short intervention with their children. We brought a lifesaving serum, an American smile and a piece of hard candy. As a mother, I want all children to have the safe, warm beds that our children enjoy, but I am not so naïve to Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow mindedness and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth, all one's lifetime. - Mark Twain believe that is possible. As Americans, we can bring immunizations to young children that will give them just a chance to work their way out of this oppressive poverty, a chance to go to school, learn a trade and earn a living. Our weapons of choice should be a smile and a vial of serum. Mother Teresa said, "the poor do not want our pity, the poor want our understanding." I will not say that I understand all the components of poverty in India or in our own hometown, but I do believe that my travels have opened the door to a new understanding of what we call the human race. In my lifetime, I thought I had seen the travesty of poverty in Central America, the dark "non-tourist" side of the Caribbean Islands and major cities in the states. Nothing can prepare you for the intensity of the poverty in India without spending time with her people, understanding her religions and her history. As I look back on my journey, I smile and pray that I will never forget what I saw, smelled, felt and learned, for if I do, I will be a lesser person. Namaste.
