I started, as many in construction do, in the estimating department. But I wanted to prove that project management is not the only route to a leadership position. I worked hard and long hours to show my peers that I wanted to do the best work possible in setting up a cost estimate for their projects. Ronny Williams, who was our vice president of operations back in the early 2000s, offered me opportunities to manage a project from time to time so I could see the full picture. From this, I lived with the project from beginning to end. This gave me a well-rounded vision that helped me take the next leadership step in the company. Women In Business Who influenced you the most to pursue your career goals, and how did that person influence you? Because I liked math, my granddad suggested I become an engineer. "They make good money," he said. He wanted to make sure I could be independent. So I didn't know I had any other choice. I applied to Georgia Tech's school of architecture and was accepted. I had no plan B. But after a few months, I changed my major to building construction management. I loved the process, the orchestration of seeing a building come into being. I graduated from Tech in three years and was the first in my family to earn a bachelor's degree. All I was hoping was to make my granddad proud, but at the same time I found a great career. What is most rewarding about your job? Seeing our folks develop and hone their skills to become the best they can be. I take pride in seeing a team of intelligent and thoughtful people come together for a purpose. Here at Sheridan that team includes everyone from carpenters to superintendents to project managers and project engineers, along with the design professionals and building owners and users. Where do you envision yourself five years from now? Out here carrying on the Sheridan Construction tradition of taking care of those we work for, those who work for us, and giving back to our community. PHOTO BY MARYANN BATES
