Dr. Cozart: I have always loved children, the medical field, and helping a child's overall health and confidence. My father is a general dentist in Cordele and my brother is here in Macon. I grew up immersed in the wonderful field of dentistry. I knew I wanted to be a dentist, but the decision to become a pediatric dentist first started when I shadowed Dr. Murphy. I could tell she loved her job, and that she made a difference in children's lives. In dental school, I was drawn to pediatric dentistry, and my teachers encouraged I go in that direction as I had a natural knack with children. Let's be honest – kids keep everything interesting, exciting, and funny! What are your biggest career challenges? Dr. Cozart: It can be challenging when a parent does not have confidence in their child's tolerance for dental treatment. As parents, it is normal to be concerned for your child's well-being. Women In Business I love to take a fearful and anxious child, and turn their dental experience around. In our office, we love to make dentistry like a game (and educational). It is truly rewarding when the child has a successful treatment visit as everyone leaves happy with pride in his or her achievement! What is most rewarding about your job? Dr. Murphy: During my 36 years as a practicing Pediatric Dentist I have thoroughly enjoyed my young patients. I love guiding them through prevention of dental problems, through dental treatment and even challenges in their personal lives. In many cases I have treated children, their children and their grandchildren … three generations. My patients are my friends. Dr. Natalie Olivia Ford Cozart is a great addition to our practice. She shares my goal of treating the whole patient through prevention, dental care and encouraging a family-centered dental home. I expect Dr. Cozart will continue this philosophy of treatment. Where do you envision yourself five years from now? Dr. Murphy: My personal goal for the future is to prevent the epidemic of early childhood caries (nursing bottle decay) resulting from prolonged and nocturnal use of a bottle or sipper cup. The resulting extensive tooth decay can be prevented by educating parents about the cause. It is a preventable, unnecessary problem. Dr. Cozart: Right where I am! I have a passion for my career, and my husband and I recently welcomed our daughter into this world! There is nothing more that I could need as long as smiling faces are walking through my home and office. I know I will continue loving life and enjoying my exciting career! (LEFT) Marilyn G.
