AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2016 35 What are the unique aspects of Hart's history and how has that molded the business today? Hart's Mortuary has been a family owned business since 1899 and operated the first crematory in the southeast since 1931. Because we are from the Macon area, we feel a strong connection to our families and to the community at large. It has always been Hart's desire to serve each family with warmth and dignity during their time of loss while providing the highest ethical standards. What has been the most significant change over the last few years? Hart's has opened a new location in Jones County. We have served many families in Jones County over the years and we wanted to become a part of the community and assist them locally. We are thankful for the positive response and the ability to serve this part of Middle Georgia. What has Hart's added in 2016? Harts implemented a new program this year called Simply Harts. Simply Harts is a cremation service for those situations when price is the critical factor being considered, while giving them the peace of mind that their loved one is continually in our care and treated respectfully. If you could pick one thing that the public doesn't understand about planning a funeral, but really needs to understand, what would it be? We believe one of the most misunderstood aspects of planning a funeral is doing a prearrangement. Whether it is years ahead or just days, a huge burden is lifted from a family if basic information is given ahead of time. Much of the historical information is needed for the death certificate, but if the deceased is a veteran, and wants military honors, a copy of discharge papers may be kept at the funeral home. Payment may be made for the service but is not required at the prearrangement. Every family, whether prepared or not for their loss, has so much to deal with during this time that prearranging would make it much easier and more peaceful.
