APRIL/MAY 2016 2 RBC HERITAGE PRESENTED BY BOEING The brainchild of the late Charles Fraser, developer of Sea Pines, the first Heritage Classic golf tournament was held in 1969 to help establish Hilton Head Island as a household name. The tournament took place at the Harbour Town Golf Links, which was newly designed by course architect Pete Dye with assistance from legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus. Another golf icon, Arnold Palmer, clinched the title and $20,000 of the inaugural competition's $100,000 purse. For the past 46 years, the Heritage has been held on the week following The Masters and has grown to become one of the most beloved, respected and charitable stops on the PGA TOUR, with a $5.9 million purse. The RBC Heritage kicks off like no other event on the PGA TOUR. In a Scottish tradition, the champion "plays himself into office" in a reenactment of a Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews. Join the parade around the Harbour Town Yacht Basin featuring the Citadel's Pipe and Drum band. Past champion Jim Furyk will be presented with his Captain of Gentlemen Golfers plaque before hitting a "featherie" golf ball with a carved hickory club into the Calibogue Sound in unison with a cannon shot. Over 100,000 spectators called The Plaid Nation will turn out in signature tartan plaid on Saturday. Hilton Head Island is a world-class golf destination and the tournament has played host to some of the greatest names in golf. Legends like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and Greg Norman have all been challenged by the fairways of the Harbour Town Golf Links, one of the few signature courses where island visitors can truly play where the pros play. Jason Day, Ernie Els, Branden Grace, Bill Haas, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Davis Love III, Graeme McDowell and Brandt Snedeker are all slated to compete over the famed Harbour Town Golf Links this year. WHEN: April 11-17 WHERE: Harbour Town Golf Links at The Sea Pines Resort
