18 | MACON MAGAZINE AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015 I f you're pokin' you ain't smoking.' " "If you're lookin' you ain't cookin.' " If I had a nickel for every time I've been scolded with those phrases over a barbecue pit, I'd have socked away a lot of money a long time ago. There is nothing in the world I like more than meat smoked over a fire for a long period of time. When my friend and Macon Magazine photographer Matt Odom asked if I'd follow him to five of his favorite barbecue restaurants in the area for this story, I jumped at the chance. What the last couple of weeks didn't do for my waistline, they certainly made up for in regards to my appreciation for barbecue in Middle Georgia. I had some good food, heard some fantastic stories, and got to hang out with a friend - three of my favorite things. There is no doubt that we could have just as easily put 10 more restaurants on this list. If you don't have strong opinions about barbecue, then I just don't trust you. Every joint on this list made me proud to be a carnivore, and I'd recommend them to anyone I know. On Que Sampling local barbecue is a labor of love by BRAD EVANS | photography by MATT ODOM
