At press time there were 60 dogs housed at the Macon-Bibb County Animal Welfare, and there are hundreds more at the local non-prot animal shelters. While many animals are lucky enough to be at the no-kill shelters, it's heart breaking for the employees at animal welfare when they have to make e List (dogs to be euthanized) because of lack of room. "It is always our goal to nd homes for our animals. When an owner surrenders their pet to us and it's not a matter of waiting for the real owner to nd a pet, those are often the rst ones who make the list," said Sarah Tenon, director of Macon Bibb Animal Welfare. "People need to think carefully before they choose to take care of a living being." To help build awareness, Ocmulgee Traders and animal welfare are hosting "Walk-A-Human" every Wednesday in October. From 11 a.m.-2 p.m., anyone may come downtown to the park on Poplar Street near Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and walk a shelter dog, without obligation to adopt. Volunteers will be on hand to assist, and the area will be fenced. On Nov. 1. Main Street Macon and Ocmulgee Traders will hold "Wag-o-Ween" from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.in downtown Macon, where dog-owners will dress up their pets in costume and take them trick-or-treating to participating businesses. ose businesses will vote for the best costume and award a prize. Current participating businesses are TailsSpin and Ocmulgee Traders. "We think this is a win-win-win situation - people spend a lovely fall day with their pets, downtown businesses get some exposure, and the dogs get treats," said Steven Fulbright of Main Street Macon.
