82 l MACON MAGAZINE DECEMBER/JANUARY 2013 Take a stroll down Cherry Street, just past the Greek Corner Deli, and you're likely to notice a stunning Americana-style, rustic- modern interpretation of what looks like a Soviet propaganda poster. e fiery bright lipstick-red background sets off a white pick and ax, which glow every so slightly, and are joined as one with a swirly black ampersand. To either side of the symbols are words, "Work Late" and "Rise Early." At the bottom, read the words "PRODUCT OF MACON, GA," right above the logo of "MODERN GIANT, GRAPHIC DESIGN & SILKSCREEN CO." e poster might be mixed in with ads for club nights, indie rock shows and whatever else can be crammed on the small allocated banner space, but it stands out a mile in its thoughtful precision and exquisite design. And it sums up the careful, absorbingly contemplative nature of the sleek but rough-hewn design strategy of Jason Frost, the man behind Modern Giant. "Initially, it was less about me having an idea and more about people perceiving it in their own fashion," said Frost, regarding the genesis for the name Modern Giant, which is the mantra for his work. "But as time went on, and coming from a musical background where your lyrical content was very important, it really needed to make sense to 'me' and create a platform to launch from. "It really became less than a name at that point and more of an ethos, because I really dedicate myself to each individual project no matter what it's for. ere have been many, many hours (and days) spent designing one single poster, so the finished piece will place the client in the proper light and how their market perceives them." You may have seen this ethos echoing from posters and T-shirts for local musicians such as Flocco Torres, events like Crossroads Writers Conference and Poetic Peace, and even the political campaign for Chris Horne. The Crossroads Writers Conference posters, logos and propaganda are especially inspiring, with this year's MADE in MACON UP AGAINST THE WALL WITH MODERN GIANT by leila regan-porter Photography by danny gilleland
