68 l MACON MAGAZINE DECEMBER/JANUARY 2013 What advanced technologies or procedures are you using? The expansion of services to Houston Heart Institute (HHI) includes interventional cardiac procedures, such as coronary stents and angioplasty. Also, each of our ambulances are now equipped with technology capable of diagnosing heart attacks on-scene. Who benefits the most from this? Our entire community benefits from these services. By having such advanced cardiac treatment available in Houston County, we are now able to save valuable time and, possibly, lives. What is significant about the "90-minute time frame"? According to the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC), for anyone experiencing a STEMI heart attack (high-risk heart attack), the immediate goal is to restore blood supply to the affected area of the heart within 90 minutes of the first sign of chest pain. The heart muscle begins to die immediately and without cardiac intervention, patients have a very high death rate. The goal is for patients to undergo emergency cardiac catheterization. How will the building expansion of Houston Heart Institute expand the services of Houston Medical Center? When will the project be completed? The new areas will feature innovative technology to accommodate the latest invasive procedures, enhance and expand capabilities currently in existence at HHI. The project will add two state-of-the- art cath labs featuring high tech imaging services. We will also be renovating the existing beds in the recovery room, adding a nursing station and six recovery room beds. The waiting room will be expanded and a new parking area for patients and their families will also be added. The 11,720 square foot expansion will be completed in phases with the final phase of the project expected to be completed in late 2013. What other services are provided by the Houston Heart Institute? Houston Heart Institute offers inpatient and outpatient services dedicated to the detection and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In addition to treating STEMI heart attacks, HHI provides a wide range of emergency cardiac services. Outpatient cardiac services, such as EKG testing and holter monitoring, are performed in the Cardiology department located inside Houston Medical Center. Health Connections Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation is also part of HHI and offers a full service cardiac rehabilitation program on the campus of Houston Medical Center.
