October/November 2026 | maconmagazine.com 35 RIGHT "We have such beautiful things because we've got such gen- erous people in Macon that give us their lovelies. And to be able to share it, when the people come through and get something they're really excited about, it's just a really good feeling. Preservation is a wonderful thing, Historic Macon tries saves the old memories, buildings, the old things. You need to have a past to remember. I like things that have memories or history. I like old things. Do you get sad when a building you love is no longer there? I don't want to stimy people building today. But there is room to save some of the history of Macon." Betty Sweet Ladson, decades of ser- vice, mostly in the Garden section RIGHT "The best I can tell, Roy and I started volunteering at the Middle Georgia Historical Society's Flea Market in 1985. Mom was here until 2020 when she died. I do this because of her. And I like history, and I believe in Macon. We've even brought our grandchildren! William Slocumb [volunteer] has taught me so much here. I can look at something now, and go, 'That's valuable.' It's something fun to do and get around people. You never know what you're gonna find or what will be what will be donated." Kathy Griffis ABOVE "I'm the handy- man! We work weeks to get ready. We block off Wednesdays. That's when we work. It's fun to see what people think is good." Roy Griffis RIGHT "We donated most of my dad's fur- niture, some of which he made by hand, after he passed. Almost everything sold. Very fun to see it all go!" Taylor McNeill RIGHT "The people that come here are fantastic. [The volunteers], we call them family. We're devoted to the mission. It's something that brings us all together, and we have a lot of fun. We love it!" Brad Pierce
