INTRODUCTION BY SUSANNAH COX MADDUX | PHOTOS BY JESSICA WHITLEY Five U N D E R 40 Our Young Leaders T his year has brought twists and turns that keep us guessing what's next, from affordability challenges and heat waves to reinvention and finding new ways to lean into an abundance mindset, both on the global stage and right here in Macon. When the stakes are high, Macon meets the moment in our culture, creativity, and coming together. Since 2000, Macon Magazine has championed rising young leaders who are doing this work in and far beyond their day jobs. We believe this work is critical for our growing city and region. This year's leaders are fired up and ready. Peer nominated by the last 25 years of young leaders, these five share a devotion to being former (and current) "theatre kids," which has formed their identities, though their current commitments and focus is dynamic. They're delivering economic development to Downtown Macon, pathways for both known and underground artists, justice from the public education sector, diverse audiences and experiences from our historic theatres, and building bridges in our faith and immigrant communities. As one past young leader, Emily Hopkins wrote, "These are leaders in our community who deserve to be recognized. I can wholeheartedly say that Macon would not be as successful or connected as it is today without their work." It's a nod to the power of observing and listening. When we do, we can find the good to guide the way into another year. August/September 2026 | maconmagazine.com 41
