Sheknita Smith I'd tell an emerging leader that it's okay to be uncertain. Every leader I know has gone through a season of uncertainty. But it's often in that uncertainty that clarity comes. Focus on who you want to become, your values, and how you want people to feel when they encounter you. For me, a core value is honoring the humanity of people. That drives my leadership choices. One accomplishment I'm proud of is serving on the Macon Black Culture board. We hosted Juneteenth events and mentorship at Northeast High. It's about collective identity and cultural pride. Another is my role as chair of the East Macon Federal Credit Union, which will serve residents in East Macon to combat predatory lending. There are nearly 90 payday lenders in the area. This credit union will help people meet everyday needs with dignity. We're nearly finished with the chartering process—it's been years in the making. DSTO Moore I'd tell an emerging leader to take it one day at a time, man. Seven years ago, I never thought I'd be right here talking to you. I never take nothing for granted. Practice delayed gratification and keep on working hard. You never know where you'll be in five years. I'm still continuing the "Macon Chose Me" project. It's dear to my heart. Every day I meet someone new who wants to be a part of it. With the help of Macon Magazine, it's going to a bigger crowd. I'm from Macon, born in Pleasant Hill. I'd tell someone who thinks nothing good's going on to become a visitor in their own city. Take a tour. Go outside your element. My mom didn't know too much about Macon until I took her on the Visit Macon van tour. She saw a whole new Macon. 56 maconmagazine.com | August/September 2025
