92 maconmagazine.com | February/March 2025 W hat does being a Southern host mean to you? If the words hospitality, comfort, beauty, warmth, tradition, and joy quickly come to mind, you're not alone – but when translating these qualities over to your dining experience, where do you start? To create a kind, welcoming, and gentle atmosphere for loved ones to gather at any time of the year, we've listed a few design staples to have on hand next time you're hosting tea time with friends, brunch with the in-laws, or weeknight family dinners. M U S T - H A V E T A B L E T O P BY SHIVANI VYAS AND MEREDITH MCKENZIE PHOTO BY DSTO MOORE Rattan Chargers These textured, stain-resistant placemats will add a touch of elegance to any Southern tabletop in any season. Found in multiple hues from honey, dark brown, or white— rattan is a timeless material that will complement just about any color scheme. You can use placemats for everyday meals just as much as formal events or dinners. Centerpieces Your centerpiece is the focal point of your tablescape so use it as a design opportunity to create a statement display that speaks to you. Build it in layers by using fresh magnolia leaves or seasonal produce for texture, tapered candlesticks for a soft glow, artist-made pottery, and vases for beauty. Cheery, Colorful Linens Layer your tablescape with soft textiles in varying textures to elevate your setup. For example: pair striped napkins with a floral tablecloth or a solid cotton tablecloth with a velvet runner. Then, try seasonal refreshes like multicolored paisleys for the summer and tartan for the holidays. Charcuterie/Cheese Boards These boards come in all shapes, sizes, materials, and colors. So depending on the season and occasion, switch out your boards to reflect your style. For example, try a pumpkin-shaped board for fall and another scalloped marble board for a more classic touch. Bonus: you don't have to reserve cheese boards just for charcuterie nights – because these decor staples can look just as pretty on display on your kitchen countertops when not in use!
