44 maconmagazine.com | June/July 2024 The first two photos are Scott in her basement recording studio. Set in pride of place in the musician's "man cave" is this painting of Scott by Gribbon, which became the cover for her 2021 album. Written in the pandemic, much of "Thirstier" explores passion in commitment. On the title track, Scott sings, "Baby, keep me in your fantasies. Baby, even though you live with me ... The more of you I drink, the thirstier I get." Part of why TORRES' music never fails to surprise is the creative way she views the world. When she was recording her 2015 album, "Sprinter," in rural England, produced by Rob Ellis of PJ Harvey fame, Scott went on a walk through the fields. As she looked at a pasture edged by hedgerows, she thought, "What an enormous room." Returning to the cottage where she was staying, she wrote this note. She kept hold of it as inspiration for her 2024 album by that title. Upstairs, Scott's hat hints much about the vibe of her upcoming album. As we stepped into the garden, Gribbon, a Tennesseean, and Scott mentioned how good it was to have a home full of Southern voices. In the final shot, we see Scottwhere she relaxes by tending their backyard garden. Appropriately for her visceral oeuvre, the predominant planting is bleeding heart flowers. MM felt as surprised to be invited to Scott's home as she was to be invited home for Bragg Jam. But if this visit taught us anything, it's to "jerk into joy" and find beauty wherever surprise takes you. Behind the scenes: the photos BY MM STAFF
