April/May 2024 | maconmagazine.com 55 Now, attracted by the sense of community she has felt downtown – which she discovered as she painted a mural at The Bohemian Den over the course of several weeks – and excited by the idea of living in a walkable city, she and her spouse are becoming permanent Downtown Macon residents. Imagine you have a totally free weekend to spend downtown this spring. How would you support women-owned ventures? I'd walk to Macon Bagels and order The Sweet Thing. Then I'd visit Sweet Eleanor's for an extra hot Americano. (Sweet Eleanors is not woman-owned, but it honors a very strong woman, and they have excellent coffee.) I'd pop in at Elizabeth's Vintage or Frankie's to buy gifts for girlfriends. I'd take a peek inside the Green Light Gallery to see any new creations by Hazel Caldwell. I'd wander the streets and soak in murals by Erin Hawkins and other local artists. Dinner at Pearl or Yollah. What can Macon do to better support women in business? What a strong and powerful community we become when women support women. I've seen it! One of the reasons I love Macon is how all people are embraced and welcomed, including women. Organizations like NewTown offering entrepreneurial training and business loans are a great example of this. It would be quite cool if we could see more HERstory throughout Macon in the form of statues, murals, art, etc. What's a hidden gem downtown? Most people know that Macon is a music city, and we are. But, to me, Macon should also be on the map for our beautiful historic architecture and buildings. Take a walk down College Street, Georgia Avenue, High Street, Cherry Street, Poplar, or Mulberry, and just look at the homes and buildings. Stunning!
