DECEMBER 2023/JANUARY 2024 | maconmagazine.com 35 NewTown Macon is an independent nonprofit making Downtown Macon safe, beautiful, fun, affordable, and locally led. Their comprehensive approach to downtown development has resulted in 80% storefront occupancy, 94% loft occupancy, and 1M+ annual event attendance. I really love how many people just stop while putting the lights up to say how excited they are and how much they love the show. I have met so many people (and dogs!) while out helping that just stop by to say hello or to throw a ball or stick. It is always a nice time for a break. What's a perfect night of seeing the Christmas lights? My favorite thing is to get a hot chocolate and walk through the lights. Now that we have Sweet Eleanor's and Taste and See, it makes it easier to grab a nice coffee or hot chocolate and take a walk. And people watching! There are plenty of outdoor dining options where you can see and hear the Extravaganza before you set out on your adventure. What do recommend people do to get involved in Downtown Macon? Just ask, "how can I help?". There are so many events downtown throughout the year, and each one needs a helping hand. There is something for every personality and availability schedule. The Beer Festival, Magnolia Soap Box Derby, 5K races, Downtown Hype Team, First Friday events, and more. There is always something you can do to lend a helping hand, even if you only have an hour to spare. Poplar Street during the Extravaganza. Photo courtesy of Community Foundation of Central Georgia.
