Macon is a great place for students to hang out and get connected with the local community. There is a great variety of things to do over the weekends, with small businesses lining downtown and a thriving local arts and music scene. A typical weekend for me starts on a Friday night, which is when I spiritually recharge from the tensions of the week with my synagogue, Congregation Sha'Arey Israel. Once shul is over, I relax with a walk downtown or in one of the many parks in Macon, then head home to enjoy a quiet evening alone or with a few close friends. Saturdays are a time for me to enjoy Macon's art scene, and I'll usually walk to the Tubman Museum and then to many of the small local galleries peppered throughout the downtown area. That, or I'll drive to the Museum of Arts and Sciences and enjoy the rotating exhibitions there. To finish the day, I'll enjoy a meal with friends at Piedmont Brewery and Kitchen and check to see if there's a band I'm interested in at downtown venues. The Hummingbird hosts a range of bands, and I really enjoy what they put on. Macon has been my home for years, but attending Mercer opened many doors for me to try new things, meet interesting people, and experience my hometown in new ways! One of my favorite things to do on weekends is attending the Macon Film Guild screenings at the historic Douglass Theatre. They show lots of different indie and foreign language films and documentaries, and it's a great way to meet new friends of all ages and share a box of popcorn. I like to grab tacos at my favorite spot, La Bella Morelia, afterward, since it's just down the street. To support local artisans and farmers, you should visit Macon's Mulberry Market (weekly) and the Downtown and Wesleyan Markets (monthly), which offer all kinds of Georgia-grown produce and handmade goods. One of my favorite things about this city is that there's always something going on! Emma Johnston, '21 Nico Fox, '23 31
