OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2021 | maconmagazine.com 49 THE MACON-MERCER Symphony Orchestra Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra (MMSO) is a groundbreaking intergenerational collaboration between emerging artists of the McDuffie Center and principal musicians from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to bring the grand power of symphony music back to Macon, conducted by GRAMMY award winner Ward Stare. Community collaboration gives voice to local stars and amplifies them on stage. The symphony will play an expansive program, from Beethoven to hip-hop. We want to be a vibrant gathering place for Middle Georgia to come together and celebrate. More music will be Macon's #MondayMotivation. Monday, Oct. 4 A blockbuster opening concert featuring the Prokofiev, Symphony No. 1 (Classical Symphony), Beethoven Symphony No. 7, and Macon's own Otis Redding Foundation students and campers orchestrated by Townsend School of Music faculty member Christopher Schmitz. Monday, Nov. 22 The second concert opens with the powerful and dramatic tone poem Egmont Overture by Beethoven and concludes with the immensely popular Italian Symphony of Felix Mendelssohn. Beulahland Gospel Choir joins the show in orchestrated spirituals arranged by celebrated Macon Pops conductor Matt Catingub. Monday, Feb. 14 Spend a love-filled Valentine's Day with Tchaikovsky's Overture to Romeo and Juliet and Symphony No. 4, considered his greatest compositional work. Also, rising star double bassist/composer Xavier Foley will perform For Justice and Peace, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organization. Monday, Apr. 25 The season concludes with the winner of Townsend's Concerto competition and the explosive Beethoven's Symphony No. 2, written during the author's depression.
