From hip-hop to Haydn, Otis Redding Foundation students to Carnegie Hall composers, the orchestra was the place to be. e Grand was filled with the joy of music, the power of the Middle Georgia community and Mercer University's McDuffie Center Young Artists collaborating with Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians. Monday, Oct. 17 Roderick Cox, guest conductor Smetana Bartered Bride Overture Ravel Daphnis and Chloé Suite no. 2 Bernstein Symphonic Dances from West Side Story To open the second season of Macon's smash success symphony, we celebrate the homecoming of Roderick Cox, the Macon-born superstar conductor garnering worldwide recognition. This lighthearted program borrows from epic love stories across a number of cultures, from Smetana's comic opera The Bartered Bride to Ravel's mythic ballet Daphnis et Chloé to Bernstein's Broadway West Side Story. Monday, Nov. 21 Jeffrey Turner, conductor Aaron Diehl, piano Bernstein Overture to Candide Dvořák Symphony no. 9, E Minor, "From the New World" Gershwin Concerto in F major A thoughtful MMSO concert highlights the diversity of American experiences: "From the New World," created when Czech-born Dvořák was working in the U.S., and one of the most popular orchestral pieces from an American composer, Bernstein's Candide overture. Jazz virtuoso Aaron Diehl will take on Gershwin, an American icon, in Concerto in F. Monday, Feb. 13 Peter Oundjian, guest conductor Jasmine Habersham, soprano Barber School for Scandal Overture Barber Knoxville: Summer of 1915 Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5, op. 64, E minor Enjoy a Valentine's date at the symphony featuring rising opera star and Macon native Jasmine Habersham. Attend a romantic evening at The Grand Opera House, featuring the passionate and powerful Overture to The School for Scandal by Barber along with the fiery Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 5. Habersham will take a spellbinging solo with the emotional Knoxville: Summer of 1915. Monday, Apr. 17 Jeffrey Turner, conductor Dvořák Serenade for Strings in E major, Op. 22 Townsend School of Music Concerto Competition Winner Mozart Symphony no. 41 in C major, K 551, "Jupiter" The season concludes with the always popular Townsend Concerto Competition winner, along with popular favorites in the canon. Dvořák's elegant Serenade for Strings was composed in just two weeks, but has enjoyed a far longer run in popularity. Then hear "Jupiter," so named due to the stunning scope of Mozart's longest and most complex work, to wrap up a heavenly year of music.
