PUBLISHER AND GUEST EDITOR'S NOTE In Music Memoriam N ever did we think in planning the first ever commemorative Macon music issue that we'd have to set aside a page for those no longer with us. But this is Macon music, and when you think of the deep-steeped history of our city, it's laced with tragedy, triumph and a dedication to doing it all over and over again. Here in Macon, we have a tendency to lose some of our key musicians far too soon. But what they leave behind is often bigger than any of us – and what any of us ever expected. This issue is dedicated to those who left music etched in our memories: Otis Redding, Duane Allman, Berry Oakley, Lamar Williams Sr., Butch Trucks, Gregg Allman and the one and only Little Richard Penniman. It's dedicated to a family, starting with Phil Walden, Philip Walden and most recently, G. Scott Walden. And it's dedicated to those we lost in the throes of this issue, the ones who were part of the now, the ones who leave us a lasting legacy on our community through the music they made and the everlasting songs they left behind. - JW AND SM Dustin Murdock MAY 15, 1994 - MAY 19, 2022 During the making of this issue, Macon lost a constant in our music scene. Dustin Murdock was a multi-instrumentalist who lent his talent to many mentioned in this issue. He was a fixture among local musicians and has a presence throughout this issue, from playing regularly with many of the artists you'll find here to recording with some of the staples, to encouraging and backing up the up and comers of Macon music. You could often find him playing with his mentor Robert Lee Coleman, seen in this issue, or recording with his own act The Mulberries, who were in the midst of finishing up a full-length album. Macon lost a cornerstone talent, and it's going to take some time to find another who shares his commitment, passion and talent towards the sound. Dustin is going to be missed at the gig, the jam, the studio and at the heart of Macon music. 30 maconmagazine.com | JUNE/JULY 2022 DUSTIN MURDOCK. PHOTO BY DSTO MOORE.
