valuable work of protecting architectural elements in the community, and it awarded
Nouvella O'Bryant, a historic preservation and restoration student at Savannah
Technical College, with the inaugural internship in the summer of 2021.
"Historic preservation breathes life back into an area, providing economic
opportunities and drawing people together. It's never just about a building. You can't
put a price or a number on the importance of doing this work in areas like Macon or
other small towns and cities across the country," said O'Bryant.
Surely, Jean League Newton would have agreed with the inaugural intern. And while
neither Edith or Suzy went into architecture to follow in their mother's footsteps, they
are intent on preserving her legacy and overseeing the architecture of her impact that
will last well beyond their own lives.
