All performances take place at e Grand Opera House at 7:30 p.m. Ward Stare, conductor Monday, Oct. 4 The newly formed Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra begins its inaugural season with a blockbuster concert featuring the Prokofiev, Symphony No. 1 (Classical Symphony), Beethoven Symphony No. 7, and Otis Redding Foundation students and campers. Prokofiev's work premiered in 1918 and has become one of his most popular compositions. In composing the Classical Symphony, Prokofiev sought to draw inspiration from Joseph Haydn and other classical composers. Of Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, it has been written that "this symphony is the richest melodically and the most pleasing and comprehensible of all Beethoven symphonies." Making the evening more memorable will be an appearance of the Otis Redding Foundation students and campers performing their songs, orchestrated by Townsend School of Music faculty member Christopher Schmitz. An opening concert not to be missed! Monday, Nov. 22 The second concert of the Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra opens with the powerful and dramatic tone poem Egmont Overture by Beethoven. This work remains one of his most performed orchestral pieces and is correlated to the story of Count Egmont by the great German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Concluding the concert will be the immensely popular Italian Symphony of Felix Mendelssohn. This work is considered by many to be the epitome of Mendelssohn's compositional genius. Also appearing on tonight's concert will be the Beulahland Gospel Choir performing orchestrated spirituals by the celebrated conductor of Macon Pops, Matt Catingub. Monday, Feb. 14 The Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra invites you to spend a love-filled evening of music on Valentine's Day. The special Valentine concert will open with Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Overture to Romeo and Juliet and will conclude with his Symphony No. 4, considered by the composer to be his greatest compositional work. We are also pleased to have rising star double bassist/composer Xavier Foley join with the orchestra for a performance of his For Justice and Peace co- commissioned by Carnegie Hall and the Sphinx Organization. Monday, Apr. 25 The season concludes with the winner of the Townsend School of Music Con- certo competition, along with Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 and Macon hip-hop artist, Bob Lennon. Written just after losing his hearing, Beethoven's Symphony No. 2 was composed during one of the most depressed times of his life, but Beethoven shows little sign of his obvious despair and ends with an explosive finale. Maconite Bob Lennon also takes to the stage in this final concert of the year to perform his commission, "Don't You Look at Me."
