Massee cared deeply about the artistic, cultural and historical life of the South. Past Massee Lectures have been given by Rick Hutto, Carlos Dews and Tom Johnson. This year's lecture will be given by William Underwood Eiland. Eiland has a long and distinguished career as director of the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia. With a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, contributions to more than 60 publications, innumerable board memberships, a host of awards and countless honors, Eiland is eminently well-qualified to deliver the Massee Lecture. However, it is the friendship he shared with Massee that makes him a truly inspired choice. Massee and Eiland knew and admired one another greatly. Massee donated his vast collection of Isadora Duncan memorabilia to the Georgia Museum, along with other important pieces from the collections he amassed. Both men shared a love of storytelling and are considered by many to be among the South's greatest raconteurs. At 2 p.m. Oct. 10, Eiland will deliver a lecture entitled "Alabama, Mother Mine, Resident in the Kingdom of Cotton, a Lament." The Hay House is hosting the lecture, which will be free and open to the public as part of the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation's Fall Ramble. — CAREY PICKARD AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2021 | maconmagazine.com 25
