JOHN WHITT
Atrium Navicent Health EMS
WHY ARE YOU DRIVEN TO YOUR
WORK?
I've always loved helping people.
I feel like my job as a paramedic
allows me to make a small difference
in the world every day. I started as a
volunteer firefighter at age 18, where
I developed a love for public safety.
After obtaining my state certifications
in fire suppression, rescue and
vehicle extrication, I attended
college and obtained my paramedic
certifications.
WHAT COULD PEOPLE DO TO MAKE
YOUR JOB EASIER?
People could make our jobs
easier by using emergency medical
services appropriately. When people
call us for a ride to the emergency
room for something that's not an
emergency, it can cause a significant
and unnecessary strain on emergency
services, and it takes us away from
true emergencies and those people
who really need us.
WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL APPRECIATED?
A simple "thank you" makes my
day.
WHAT DO YOU WANT MORE PEOPLE
TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR WORK?
I want people to know we are
human, too. Sometimes, as first
responders, the things we deal
with weigh heavily on our minds.
Some days we have rough calls, and
sometimes we just need a minute to
regroup.
WHEN YOU WAKE UP IN THE NIGHT,
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT?
I often think about work and how I
could better serve our patients. I think
about what my next shift may hold.
IF I HAD MORE TIME, I WOULD:
Spend more time outside enjoying
nature and decompressing.
