LOCAL BUZZ Macon Volunteer Clinic launches Helpline SOS AS IT DID WITH MANY organizations around the world, the COVID-19 pandemic shocked Macon Volunteer Clinic's operations. MVC quickly pivoted to protect staff, volunteers and patients, while preserving vital services. Telemed was launched immediately, and access to medicines, diabetes supplies and injections was safely maintained. Some Mercer University medical school students called MVC's entire active patient roster to check in, assess medical needs, query social circumstances such as employment, transportation, food and housing, and reinforce health practices to prevent virus transmission. After returning to a hybrid of pre-pandemic operations in June, MVC launched Helpline SOS, a COVID-19 resource for the entire community. When individuals call MVC's main line (478-755-1110) they are instructed to dial an extension for COVID-19 queries. This activates a voice recognition system which populates a real-time Google doc. MVC staff return the inquiries to this COVID-10 helpline. "During these uncertain times, MVC knows its patients need it more than ever, and its donors believe in our capacity to adapt to meet critical needs," Nancy White, MVC's executive director, said in a news release. "Long before the pandemic made 'flattening the curve' a catch phrase, that's what MVC's been doing – 'flattening the curve' by keeping hard working, uninsured neighbors from using hospital emergency rooms for primary care. LOCAL BUZZ New sports complex named in honor of Vernon Sinclair Sr. THE CAL RIPKEN SR. FOUNDATION, MLB-MLBPA Youth Development Foundation, Braves RBI - Macon, and the Macon Housing Authority have dedicated a new field named for Vernon Sinclair Sr. at Tom Fontaine Complex in Macon. "This is what can be accomplished when so many fantastic, goal-oriented organizations work together," said Jeff Battcher with Braves RBI - Macon. "This field named in honor of my Little League baseball coach Vernon Sinclair Sr. will stand as a testament that a humble, simple man can have a lasting impact on so many." The multipurpose, synthetic-surface, youth sports facility will serve as home field to United Way initiative and Braves RBI - Macon, as well as a venue for youth recreational sports programs provided by the Boys & Girls Club of Central Georgia. "This is an exciting day for the kids of Macon, who now have access to a safe place to play, learn and grow," said Steve Salem, president and CEO of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation. Macon Housing Authority was thrilled to obtain the property to promote positive youth athletic programs and activities in the area. As such, the field will offer a productive environment for students at Matilda Hartley Elementary School. "Macon Housing Authority is proud to be part of this momentous occasion and is grateful for all the behind the scenes work that went into this collaborative effort between so many great partners. This will offer underserved youth and the entire community enjoyment of the facility for years to come," said Mike Austin, CEO of Macon Housing Authority. The multi-purpose field is designed for soccer, baseball and softball and includes a digital scoreboard, goals, dugouts and bleachers. "This park gives area kids a safe, state-of-the-art environment to play in while also expanding the historic Tom Fontaine complex," said George McCanless, president and CEO of United Way of Central Georgia.
