charitable, others governmental and the lines blur between addressing immediate needs and working longer-term to create things like basic life opportunities and individual's abilities to benefit from such opportunities. e list of those helping is long and often good work is done quietly in unseen places – at times by individuals – but need outruns help. ough impossible to include all, here are additions to the list. ere's HomePort Macon and the motel they're refurbishing as a veteran's transition facility. In Warner Robins, Genesis Joy House serves women, especially women veterans, and is working to open a shelter on Marshall Avenue. Also in Warner Robins is Community Outreach Service Center whose shelter-program has been run on Duke Street for 21 years by Air Force retiree, the Rev. John omas and his wife, Izzy. Houston County's Family Promise provides temporary housing for homeless families in churches while they make their way into sustainable dwellings. Organization leaders agree the driving force behind the good being done rests with individuals who make the choice to do something, even something small. Sister eresa encourages everyone to be aware of people actually homeless but also to be sensitive to people in their daily circles. "Be aware of people you know well or casually who may have had a reduction in income or be suffering in some unknown way," she said. "ey need a little help, too. And if we help them where they are, we might prevent something much worse." Sister eresa concluded her advice with a quote from Mother Teresa, who gained fame working with the poor of Calcutta. After getting admiration from so many who told her they wished they could join her, Sister eresa said Mother Teresa's answer was, "Don't come to Calcutta – do for your own neighbor." And Frischkorn added that even with masks in play, never underestimate the power of giving someone a big, genuine smile.
