42 maconmagazine.com | APRIL/MAY 2020 Last stop: MeMaw's at LG on Mumford Road ough the petite structure is easy to miss, the unique, loving experience is not easy to forget. As Walter and I visited our third and final stop on this venture, we found ourselves surrounded by three generations of Locketts, discussing with us the life and legacy of "MeMaw," the late Alfreda Lockett, over a few plates of collards, oxtails and rice. Established in 2013, MeMaw's at LG was founded by husband-wife duo, Richard and Alfreda Lockett. Alfreda, the daughter of community leader Filmore omas, was known as MeMaw and established herself profoundly within the community. Alongside her professional pursuits with BellSouth and academic pursuits at Helms College and Middle Georgia State University, Alfreda maintained her devotion to give of herself through her cooking. Her restaurant served as an expression of her love for the Macon community. When she passed in 2017, Richard continued their passion of bringing people together through sharing a meal. From the restaurant's name, to the portrait of Alfreda that graces the wall, to her grandchildren doing homework in the back booth, it is evident that her legacy lives on in many ways. One way worth noting are the family recipes from Alfreda's great-grandmother As we continue to monitor developments regarding coronavirus (COVID-19), I hope you, your team members and your loved ones are healthy, safe and taking the necessary precautions. While we have taken steps to keep our United Way team healthy, we are still maintaining our initiatives and working alongside our nonprofit partners to ensure that needed services are available. In addition to impacting the economy, the COVID-19 pandemic is greatly expanding the need for charitable organizations to provide additional services in an unprecedented manor. United Way of Central Georgia and the Community Foundation of Central Georgia have joined forces to establish the Central Georgia COVID-19 Response & Recovery Fund to provide funding to our area nonprofits supporting local people and organizations affected by the pandemic. History shows in times of crisis, we've always risen to the challenge as a nation: growing victory gardens during WWII, raising flags aŒer 9/11, stacking sandbags during floods, and sending supplies to help with relief efforts for Hurricanes Katrina and Sandy. We are again facing a crisis in our country, and while we are concerned about our own futures, we must not forget our neighbors who are already struggling with the financial effects of COVID-19. According to the Federal Reserve, more than one-third of Americans can be thrown into difficult financial straits by one unexpected expense of $400. As events are cancelled, sales plummet and businesses shutter, many are are losing their wages and tips. As schools close, families must choose between expensive childcare or cutting hours at work. And children who rely on the schools free-and reduced-price meal program for their breakfast and lunch each day risk going hungry. We remain committed to our community, our nonprofit partners, our neighbors and our mission "to increase the organized capacity of people in Central Georgia to care for one another." 277 MLK Jr Blvd, Ste 301 Macon, GA 31201 478-745-4732 www.unitedwaycg.org George McCanless President & CEO United Way of Central Georgia A letter to the community from Above: Food from MeMaw's.
