"Every year piles of sand appear on street corners throughout Wesleyan
Woods. This is the sign that Christmas is near! I can remember the
excitement of the luminary night as a child. We would wait for our dad
to get home from work and then run to the road to help with the set up.
It always seemed like a big, important job, but now I realize it really only
took 10 minutes max. My siblings and I would fight over who could place
the bags and how far apart they each should be. Then we would light
them and watch as the street lit up and cars came through.
"It is a really unique memory of a special time when neighbors came
together and made something beautiful for each other – and it still
happens today."

"We have a tradition that's very
dear to our family and to many of
our friends. It started 25 years ago
when our first child, our daughter
Callandria, was born on Christmas
Day. A bunch of us had gathered
awaiting her birth – my mom,
my wife Cassandra's mom, and a
number of other family and friends.
Since then, we've kept on gathering
in much the same way and tried to
keep my daughter's birthday special
as well as celebrate Christ's birth in
a special way.
"What we do is gather at 11:15
p.m. on Christmas Eve and celebrate
Callandria's birthday. We give
her presents wrapped in regular
birthday wrapping paper. Then, at
midnight, we start our Christmas
celebration and give our Christmas-
wrapped gifts. It makes it a very
special occasion with a lot of good
times together and plenty of food
with family and friends.
"Plus, I don't mind at all that
celebrating Christmas like we do
lets us sleep in a little bit extra on
Christmas mornings."
