Early in the 1920s, Hope used an inheritance to purchase a handsome two-story house in the new development of Shirley Hills. Burton's parents moved into the new house with them and lived there the rest of their lives. Life was not always easy in the Hayes household. Through the years of the Depression and World War II there was never an abundance of money and often there was illness. Hope was caregiver for her in-laws as well as for her husband. The family expanded with the arrival of sons Richard Burton Hayes III and Scott Hayes. During that time, new furniture was an unaffordable luxury. Hope used her artistic skills to paint and decorate old furniture. Decorators saw her work and engaged Hope to paint furniture for them as well. This was the beginning of a long professional career. About 1950, Hope painted her first portrait and the success of that effort led to a career as a portrait artist. By the 1970s, as she entered her 70s, Hope was commissioned by Mercer to paint portraits of all the school's presidents and all the deans of the law school. Hope lived into her early 90s and always maintained her cheerful disposition and positive attitude. Her friends miss her, but treasure the part of her that survives in her works of art. — JAMES BARFIELD Back by popular demand, The Arc Macon proudly announces our New Year's Eve Big Bash Presented by WGXA at Macon's historic Terminal Station with Macon's favorite party band, The Grapevine Band!
