Winning the job at Young Harris, she and Mark spent the next decade happily ensconced in the foothills of North Georgia, where she guided the school through several monumental changes, most notably its transition to a four-year institution, doubling the faculty and student enrollment in the process. In 2017, Cox received another unexpected job offer, this time to lead the Walter F. George School of Law. Mercer president Bill Underwood said he was elated to snag the multi- talented Cox. "Cathy has an established record of great leadership, as a journalist, attorney and political leader, as well as in higher education. We're grateful she is committing her considerable talents to leadership of Mercer's School of Law, one of the most impactful law schools in America," Underwood said. Cox is the first alumnus chosen for the helm of Mercer's law school since William Bootle in the 1930s — the judge who ordered the first admission of a black student to the University of Georgia and for whom Macon's federal courthouse is named. "In the civil rights era, Judge Bootle was a larger than life figure who had the courage to follow the law despite the fact that his decision was vastly unpopular, including with friends and neighbors. It's an honor to follow in his footsteps, but a little dismaying that it took 70 years to select another alum," she said. * * * MERCER'S MARK ON MACON AND BEYOND COMMITTED TO ensuring Mercer Law's continued prominence, Cox's focus is growing enrollment, increasing the bar passage rate and graduating students who use the law to make something better in the world.
