The 10-year expression is the first new product that Corner Creek has released. I was excited to hear that this was available in our market remarkably quickly, compared to other new products that take much more time to make it to local shelves. This bourbon is made in Bardstown, Kentucky, with corn, rye and wheat in the mashbill. It is so new that there isn't really much information about it online. I was impressed that in choosing their second product, Corner Creek chose to do what many other distillers are going away from, and that is actually giving it an age statement. For those of you who don't know the rules on this, American whiskey – including bourbon – took the approach that the Scottish distillers did and the age on the bottle has to be that of the youngest whiskey in the mix. Rum, on the other hand, is the opposite and generally uses the age of the oldest aged spirit in the mix. So, even if there is just a drop of 23-year aged rum in a bottle, then they can call it a 23-year aged rum. In the bourbon world, many companies have discontinued this trend of telling the age, due to the fact that they don't have near as much highly- aged whiskey since the bourbon boom has eaten away at their aged whiskey. The color of this whiskey has a rich and warm brown hue with good viscosity. On the nose, you get a nice mineral flavor – I'm guessing from the rye – with hints of vanilla and honey. The first sip of this whiskey is a little hot, but has mineral notes that I usually get from a rye whiskey. There are notes of slight caramel as well. The finish is slightly short, but is very pleasant. – RICHIE JONES IS THE OWNER OF DOWNTOWN GRILL AND CO-OWNER OF CIRCA AND PIEDMONT BREWERY & KITCHEN. m L O C A L B U Z Z
